5 Ways to Keep Up with the Latest Trends on a College Budget
By Megan Berryman
1. Kylie Jenner Lip Kit
Every 20-something-sorority-girl hates to love the Kylie Jenner Lip Kit. Including myself. I sat down at the time of the restock and rapidly added Dolce K to my shopping cart. Before I knew it I had it ordered—which meant I spent a total of $40.13 for a single tube of lipgloss.
Instead of blowing your budget, “Colourpop’s Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick” has an almost identical formula and look to Kylie’s Matte Lip Kits that can be shipped to you for $16.82. Here is an article with the in-depth explanation to help you get as many faux Kylie Jenner Lip Kits as possible. Yay!
2. Thrift Shopping is your Best Friend
Thrift shops are everywhere. My favorite thrift shop is filled with old jean jackets, lots of velour, and shoulder pads. I found a rack of sunglasses, and in the bottom corner sat a pair of reflective silver vintage Ray Bans. They were only $15! Now they are a wardrobe staple—I wear them almost every day and they are a much better deal than brand new $200 Ray Bans.
3. Kohl’s or Free People; Who’s Going to know?
In the fall waffle tops were on trend. Everyone at my school had one and I couldn’t bring myself to spend $68 on a top with all the Big/little shenanigans coming up. At Marshalls I found an extremely similar top in a burnt orange color for $24.95.
This is just an example, but this works with almost all trends. Stores such as Marshalls, T.J. Maxx, Kohl’s, and Target usually have knock off versions that are almost identical for half the price!
4. Raiding Mom’s Closet
This is actually a big one. With the amount of clothes that your mom has gained over the years she is guaranteed to have at least one vintage piece you could snag. The best part is she probably doesn’t even know its become vintage yet. I found a pair of old wedges that were my mom's and I wear them almost every day to Nava New York! You’d be surprised.
5. Instead of Following a Trend Make Your Own
The Adidas Originals Superstar Sneaker (aka the-white-sneaker-with-black-stripes-that everyone-and-their-mom-has) are taking the fashion world by storm. I really wanted a pair of these elite sneakers but realized they were $80 and on back order.
The next day I was in my local H&M and found a pair of white sneakers with snakeskin on the back of them for only $30 dollars. I fell in love once I tried them on, and now everyone asks me where I got them! Here is the link to purchase them!
At the end of the day it’s all how you put it together. Purchasing some items that aren't exactly what everyone's wearing at the moment might be the perfect way to complete your look or who knows, even start a new trend!
